Biological portfolio 1- Activity 1

1. Summarize the most important ideas, showing the importance of water in human body, from the text (maximum 100 words)

The ability of water to disassemble and rearrange other molecules is essential to the chemistry of life. It does this by forming weak bonds with the other molecules. This is often why we refer to water as the universal solvent. Water is a perfect conductor of electricity and this becomes important in the day to day operation of our bodies. Water is one of the very best diet aids and fat reducers. Water is an active participant in Hydrolysis, which is a major chemical process of the body. The real truth is that water is one of the best cures for our most common aliments.

Biological portfolio 1- Activity 2

2. Answer the following questions from the text:

a)       What is the percentage of the content of water in human body?
As babies we are approximately 75 to 80% water and as we grow older this percentage decreases until the percentage is reduced to approximately 60 to 65% for men and 50 to 60% for women.
b)       Is the content of water in human body the same on males and females? Why?
No, because women have a higher percentage of adipose tissue than men, that’s why they have a lower percentage of water.
c)        Does the content of water in human body remain through life?
Yes, as babies we are approximately 75 to 80% water and as we grow older this percentage decreases until the percentage is reduced to approximately 60%.
d)       Why does the text refer to water as the universal solvent?
Because water is a perfect conductor of electricity and this becomes important in the day to day operation of our bodies.
e)       Explain the contribution of water to diet aids and fat reducers.
It reduces sodium build up and helps maintain muscle tone. It helps the body eliminate waste and toxins and it also reduces fat deposits in the body by helping the body metabolize the fat that is stored in the body.
f)        According to the text, could water be considered as a suitable treatment for some illnesses? What types of diseases could improve increasing the consume of water?
Yes it could. It could improve allergies, asthma, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes. headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, colitis, alcohol dependency, lower back pain, neck pain, and more.
g)       Could we consider that coffee, tea, soda pop or drinks with alcohol as part of our water intake? Why?
No, because some of these products have caffeine or alcohol, and it reduces the water of our bodies, so it has the opposite effect us.
h)       What is the quantity of glasses of water per day recommended by the writer?
Eight glasses of water per day.
i)          Explain why the writer assumes that physical alterations associated with ageing could be related to the content of water in human body.
He thinks that there is a common generalized reduction in the amount of water in their intake, which reduces their body water percentage.
j)         Distilled or de-ionized water is named "Pure water". Is it supposed to be better for drinking? Why?
Distilled or deionised water is named "pure water", but it isn’t better for drinking because this kind of water doesn’t contain any oxygen.

k)       Does the writer agree with the use of chlorine as a disinfectant?
Yes he does, but he thinks that if dosed too heavily can cause other problems in our bodies.
l)         Explain the meaning of the sentence: "Cells are the basic structural unit of any living thing".
Every living body is composed by many cells, who develope the body basic functions
m)     Discuss about the solvent properties of water.
Water is a very important mineral to us, because our body only absorb materials which    can be dissolved in water. It also serves as a solvent for many substances so it’s also important for the transport of these products all over our bodies.

4. Look up the meaning of these words from the text and translate them into catalan.

a) adipose tissue: (body fat, fat depot or fat) is loose connective tissue composed of adipocytes. It is technically composed of roughly only 80% fat (in its solitary state) that exists in the liver and muscles. -Translate to Catalan: Teixit adipòs
b) bones: The skeleton is formed by bones. It is composed by calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. It is also a storage area for calcium, playing a large role in calcium balance in the blood. -Translate to Catalan: Ossos (Os). c) neurons: A neuron is an electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information through electrical and chemical signals.Neurons are very important components of the nervous system. -Translate to Catalan: Neurones (Neurona)
d) muscle tone: is the continuous and passive partial contraction of the muscles, or the muscle’s resistance to passive stretch during resting state. It helps to maintain our constant posture, and it declines during REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep). -Translate to Catalan: To Muscular. e) fluid retention (also known as water retention): is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the circulatory system or within the tissues or cavities of the body. -Translate to Catalan: Retenció de líquids.

f) high blood pressure: “Blood pressure” is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If this pressure rises and stays high over time (high blood pressure), it can damage the body in many ways (coronary heart disease, heart failure). -Translate to Catalan: Alta pressió sanguínea (hipertensió). g) taste buds: contain the receptors for taste. They are located around the small structures on the upper surface of the tongue, soft palate, upper esophagus and epiglottis, which are called papillae. These structures are involved in detecting the five (already known) elements of taste perception: salty, sour, bitter, sweet, and umami. -Translate to Catalan: Papil·les gustatives. h) enzymes: “Enzyme” is a protein formed by the body that acts as a catalyst to cause a certain desried reaction. Enzymes are very specific. Each enzyme is designed to initiate a specific response with a specific result. -Translate to Catalan: Enzims. i) bloodstream: is the blood flowing through a circulatory system of an animal, carrying substances from one tissue to another. -Translate to Catalan: Sang, corrent sanguini. j) lymph: Is a clear, watery, sometimes faintly yellowish fluid derived from body tissues that contains white blood cells and circulates throughout the lymphatic system, returning to the venous bloodstream through the thoracic duct. It acts to remove bacteria and certain proteins from the tissues, transport fat from the small intestine, and supply mature lymphocytes to the blood. -Translate to Catalan: Limfa. k) catalyse: It means to speed up a process, especially a chemical or biochemical reaction. It also can mean: to cause catalysis or to transform or bring significant change. -Translate to Catalan: Catalitzar. I) synovial fluid: is a fluid-like material with a thick consistency that is present in many of the joints of the body. It serves the purpose of lubricating and nourishing certain parts of the joint. The joints in which synovial fluid is present are known as synovial joints, and these include the elbow, knee, shoulder, and hip joints, among others. -Translate to Catalan: Líquid sinovial. n) bile: is a bitter-tasting, dark green to yellowish brown fluid, produced by the liver of most vertebrates, that aids the process of digestion of lipids in the small intestine. In many species, bile is stored in the gallbladder and upon eating is discharged into the duodenum.Bile is composed by water, bile salts, mucus, fats, inorganic salts and cholesterol. -Translate to Catalan: Bilis o) gastric juice, or gastric acid: is a fluid secreted by various glands in the stomach lining into the lumen of the stomach, primarily for the partial digestion of food as well as the eradication of many pathogenic microbes that have concurrently entered by way of the oral cavity -Translate to Catalan: Àcid Gàstric p) mucus: (in vertebrates) is a slippery secretion produced by, and covering, mucous membranes. Mucous fluid is typically produced from mucous cells found in mucous glands. Mucous cells secrete products that are rich in glycoproteins and water. Mucous fluid may also originate from mixed glands, which contain both serous and mucous cells. -Translate to Catalan: Moc
